Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam today said the success of the student-led July Uprising was the result of the united efforts of the people and had created an opportunity to strengthen democracy in the country.

He made the remarks as the special guest at a discussion and prize-giving ceremony for composition and painting competitions organised by the National Parliament Secretariat to mark July Uprising Day 2026.

Earlier, he distributed prizes among the winners.

The Chief Whip said that while Bangladesh achieved independence through the Liberation War in 1971, the events of August 5, 2024, had opened a new chapter in consolidating that independence and restoring democracy, according to a press release.

Paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the July uprising, he expressed deep respect for the martyrs and recalled the sacrifices made during the student-led mass movement.

He added that the ousted government had siphoned off Tk 30 lakh crore abroad, suppressed freedom of expression and fundamental rights, and established a climate of fear through 'Aynagar' and other forms of repression, reports BSS.
