Any activities by the Awami League that are prohibited by law will be dealt with strictly in December, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch chief Additional Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam has said.

He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at a briefing at the DMP Media Centre in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Asked about the possibility of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina returning to Bangladesh in December and whether the Awami League might organise programmes or engage in acts of sabotage around the development, the DB chief said activities prohibited by law would not be allowed.

He said law enforcement agencies were taking a strict position and would take necessary legal action to prevent any prohibited activities.

“Ensuring the safety of the people, particularly those living in Dhaka, is one of our key responsibilities,” Shafiqul Islam said, adding that the authorities remained alert and would take measures to prevent any untoward activities.

He said necessary measures under the law would continue to prevent activities by the party whose political activities have been banned.

Arrest operations against individuals involved in such activities would also continue, he added.
