A Dhaka court Thursday placed Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal General Secretary Abdul Monayem Munna on a two-day remand in a case filed with Shahjahanpur Police Station over assaulting police and preventing them from discharging their duties in December last year.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain passed the order after Md Mostafizur Rahman, a sub-inspector of the police station and also the investigation officer of the case, produced him before it with a seven-day remand appeal.

In the remand prayer, the IO said Munna was directly involved in assaulting members of police on December 7 last year that left several law enforcers injured. So, they need to be remanded to find out vital clues about the incident, the IO said.

Defence, however, submitted a petition seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand prayer, saying that their client's name was not included in the first information report (FIR) and he was implicated in the case just to ‘harass’ him.

Upon hearing both sides, the magistrate turned down the defence pleas and placed him on remand.

Detective Branch (DB) of police detained Munna from capital’s Malibagh area when he was on his way home after attending a party event at the Engineers Institution Auditorium on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the case statement, a group of leaders and activists of BNP and its front organisations brought out an anti-government procession in Shahjahanpur area around 5:30pm on December 7 last year.

At one stage, they attacked police with brick chunks and threw crude bombs that left several law enforcers injured.

Following the incident, a case was filed against 52 leaders and activists of BNP and its front organisations in this regard. – Special Correspondent
