Dhaka, Feb 1 -A Dhaka court on Thursday rejected a bail plea of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a case filed over the vandalism of the residence of the chief justice (CJ) during the grand rally of the party on October 28 last year.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury passed the order after hearing the petition in this regard, said the defendant’s counsel Syed Joynul Abedin.

The court also rejected a remand prayer submitted by the prosecution, which also opposed the bail of the BNP leader.

Lawyer Joynul said a total of 11 cases were filed against Fakhrul over the clashes of 28 October.

Of them, his client secured bail in 10 out of the 11 cases. At least 15 BNP men obtained bail in the vandalism case filed with Dhaka’s Ramna police station.

On January 17, Fakhrul also got bail in a case filed with Paltan police station while Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court granted his bail in 9 cases on several dates.

On October 28, the CJ’s residence was vandalised centring the BNP’s grand rally in Dhaka.

Later, police lodged a case accusing 59 BNP leaders and activists including the secretary general.
