AL leader hacked dead in Netrokona

A local Awami League (AL) leader was reportedly hacked to death by his rivals at Durgapur upazila in Netrokona district on Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mojibor Rahman, 51, a resident of Naljora village under the union.

Mojibor was a member of Ward No-8 under Durgapur Municipality Awami Leage, confirmed the general secretary of the upazila AL unit Shafiqul Islam.

According to locals, there had been a loggerheads between the victim and incumbent Kullagara Union Parishad (UP) chairman Md Abdul Awal and his brothers over establishing supremacy and smuggling goods through the border.

On Sunday morning, the UP chairman's son Abir assaulted the victim's nephew Khairul Islam when he went to Susong Degree college to attend his classes. After hearing that, Mojibor along with his cohorts assaulted Abir in reply.

As sequel to it, the UP chairman's elder brother Md Shamim Mia and his associates attacked on Mojibor and his cohorts with sharp weapons, leaving seven people critically injured.

Locals rescued Mojibor and took him to Durgapur Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Dr Rakibul Hasan said Mojibor died before he was being taken to the hospital due to excessive bleeding. The actual reason behind the death would be known after autopsy.

Superintendent of Police in Netrokona Md Fayez Ahmed said victim Mojibor was made accused in 10 to 12 cases while 25 cases over--murder, narcotics, firearms, sabotage, and smuggling through the border-- were filed against the accused Shamim.

Meanwhile, another accused Awal was made accused in 24 cases, he said.

On information, police detained two suspects for primary questioning and legal action would be taken upon investigation, added SP Md Fayez Ahmed.
