TIB Calls for Two-Term Limit for Prime Ministers

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman has called for the introduction of a two-term limit for prime ministers as part of a comprehensive reform agenda.

Speaking at a press conference held at TIB's auditorium in the Midas Centre, Dhaka, Iftekharuzzaman argued that separating the roles of prime minister and party leader would enhance democratic integrity in the country. He also proposed reforms aimed at improving democracy, good governance, and reducing corruption.

Among his recommendations, Iftekharuzzaman suggested that the speaker of parliament should operate independently from party politics, serving solely as a neutral guardian of the parliament. He also proposed that the deputy speaker be selected from the opposition and that opposition members in the presidium be allowed to assume the speaker's duties if both the speaker and deputy speaker are unavailable.

Furthermore, Iftekharuzzaman urged for an amendment to Article 70 of the constitution to allow MPs the freedom to critique their own party and vote independently on various issues, excluding no-confidence motions and the budget.
