BNP Urges Govt to Revoke VAT Hike on 100+ Products
The BNP has called on the government to reverse its decision to impose Value Added Tax (VAT) and supplementary duties on over 100 products, citing the burden it places on the public amid economic hardship.
In a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Saturday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir condemned the government's decision, describing it as "imprudent" and harmful to the public.
“We demand the immediate withdrawal of these irresponsible taxes and VAT increases, which will only add to the suffering of the common people,” Fakhrul stated.
He highlighted that, amidst ongoing inflation and economic instability, the interim government’s decision to impose VAT and supplementary duties on products, including essential items like food, clothing, medicines, and mobile internet services, will worsen the financial strain on the poor and middle class.
Fakhrul urged the government to explore alternative measures, such as cutting unnecessary development expenditures, rather than imposing additional taxes on everyday essentials.
The BNP leader also emphasized the need for the government to prioritize holding national elections to establish a more accountable administration.
