The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has urged for the prompt holding of national elections, highlighting that a stable political environment is essential for economic growth and attracting investments.
“The sooner a conducive environment is created, the faster the election can be held. There’s no reason for further delay,” CPD Executive Director Dr. Fahmida Khatun said on Wednesday during the release of the “State of the Bangladesh Economy in FY2024-25” report at CPD’s office in Dhaka.
Dr. Fahmida stressed the need for a clear election timeline, proposing a window between December 2025 and June 2026. "Uncertainty is inevitable in temporary systems," she explained. "An interim or caretaker government can only function briefly, whereas a political government has a long-term mandate from the people."
She further noted that a government without public support cannot remain in power indefinitely and called for stability to boost business and investment confidence. "Stability is urgently needed for both organizational efficiency and accountability," Dr. Fahmida said.
She also emphasized that ongoing policies and reforms depend on an elected government for successful implementation. "In such uncertain conditions, major investments and structural changes will not take place. Stability is necessary for progress," she added.
CPD’s Distinguished Fellow, Dr. Mustafizur Rahman, supported her view, asserting that political and economic reforms should proceed together. He also stressed the importance of democratic processes within political parties to ensure sustainable governance.
"The country must move forward through a democratic process as soon as possible," Dr. Rahman said, concluding that reforms are crucial for Bangladesh's future.
