The abolition of a fascist system is not just about dismantling but also about rebuilding a counter-ideal, power structure, and influence, said Mahfuj Alam, adviser to the interim government.
In a Facebook post at around 2:30 am today (6 February), he emphasised the need to shift focus from destruction to reconstruction.
"We face regional and global hegemony, not just mere structures. Instead of breaking idols, we must build counter-ideals, power, and hegemony," he stated.
Referring to the recently ousted ruling party and its leader, Sheikh Hasina, Mahfuj described them as extensions of regional hegemony, built through a state vision, skilled human resources, and strong institutions. He urged that the counter-hegemony must be constructed on the same foundations.
He stressed that after years of dismantling, the time to build had arrived. However, an indefinite continuation of destruction would not ensure a better future.
"The reconstruction projects must begin swiftly. Be actively involved in building," he urged.
Mahfuj noted that implementing the Reform Commission's recommendations would soon begin, along with efforts to rehabilitate families of the wounded and deceased and ensure justice for the July massacre. He said these efforts would gain momentum within the month.
Cautioning against reacting to remarks made by Sheikh Hasina, he held regional hegemony responsible for political instability.
"The battle has just begun, and it may take a decade to resolve. Yet, we are barely prepared for it," he warned, calling for long-term strategies instead of reactive responses.
Mahfuj urged that anger, resentment, and hatred be transformed into constructive action.
"The post-uprising period gave us the opportunity to channel these emotions into positive change. That opportunity is not yet lost," he wrote.
He concluded by stressing the need for strategic thinking and preparation for an extended democratic and anti-hegemony struggle.
"The future is ahead of us, and history has given us this opportunity. We must win by developing a state vision, strengthening institutions, and fostering a skilled and dignified workforce," he said, adding, "May Allah grant us foresight."
