National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has called for the immediate cancellation of the Awami League’s registration and a complete ban on its political activities.
Speaking at the 5th founding anniversary of AB Party at the Jatiya Press Club on Friday, Nahid said, “The people of Bangladesh gave their verdict against the Awami League on August 5. They declared that this party should no longer be allowed to operate politically in the country.”
He stated that the people's decision can manifest in two ways — through the ballot or through street movements — and the August 5 event was a clear example of the latter, indicating a mass uprising.
Nahid, who previously served as the information and broadcasting adviser to the interim government, claimed that this movement reflected the rejection of both Mujibism and the Awami League. “In the face of public outrage, Awami League leaders fled the country,” he alleged.
He further argued that the party has lost all moral authority to continue in politics and the focus must now shift to legal steps. “There should be no more debate over whether Awami League can continue politically. The only question is how the legal process will unfold,” he said.
“We must now pursue a democratic solution. The party’s registration must be revoked, and all its organisational activities must be halted immediately. Only then can a judicial resolution be pursued,” Nahid added.
