BNP agrees to expansion of women's seats in parliament
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said though the party supports increasing the number of reserved seats for women in the National Parliament from 50 to 100, no consensus has yet been reached regarding the electoral system for those seats.
He made the remarks today following the second round of discussions between political parties and the National Consensus Commission, held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.
“Previously, the number of women’s seats was 30, then it was raised to 45, and in the latest constitutional amendment, it became 50,” said Salahuddin.
“Our party has proposed increasing it by another 50 seats, and most participating parties have expressed similar views. This is now reflected in the commission’s draft proposal.”
However, he emphasized that, while agreement has been reached on increasing the number of seats, the mechanism for electing representatives to these seats remains unresolved, reports BSS.
“There is still no consensus on the system of election,” he said. “That issue has been deferred for further discussion.”
