BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today accused the ruling Awami League of systematically dismantling Bangladesh’s democratic institutions and state structure over the past 15 years in power.
Speaking at a reunion marking the 21st founding anniversary of the Revolutionary Workers Party, Fakhrul said, "The fascist Awami League has destroyed all pillars of the state, including the electoral system, judiciary, bureaucracy, and vital public services like education and healthcare."
He alleged large-scale corruption, claiming the ruling party had siphoned off thousands of crores of taka, some of which were reportedly deposited in Swiss banks.
The event was held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity, with Revolutionary Workers Party General Secretary Saiful Haque presiding. Leaders from several opposition-aligned parties, including Nagorik Oikya, Ganosanghati Andolan, and Gono Odhikar Parishad, were also in attendance.
Fakhrul also welcomed the National Citizen Party (NCP) as it prepares to apply for registration, calling its emergence a positive development for opposition unity.
"A real opportunity has arisen to restore democracy by removing the fascist regime. If the opposition remains united, the people’s aspirations can be realized through the upcoming election in February," he said.
Other speakers included BNP Publicity Secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku, Mahmudur Rahman Manna of Nagorik Oikya, Khalequzzaman of the Socialist Party of Bangladesh, journalist Monir Haider, Ganosanghati Andolan’s Junaid Saki, AB Party’s Asaduzzaman Fuad, and Gono Odhikar Parishad’s Rashed Khan.
