BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed spoke at a rally organised by the Keraniganj Upazila South BNP today (5 July)

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has criticised former allies of the Awami League for now advocating proportional representation in elections, despite having no electoral success of their own.

"These groups, who supported the Awami League for 16 years and legitimised past elections, are suddenly calling for proportional representation—yet they haven’t even won a union council seat," he said at a rally in Keraniganj Upazila South.

Referring to the Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) rally on 28 June at Suhrawardy Udyan, Salahuddin described them as a fringe group pushing for reforms only after long aligning with the ruling party.

"A section dreams of staying in power forever under the guise of reform and justice—but that dream will become a nightmare," he warned.

Salahuddin called for unity among pro-democracy forces and urged supporters not to forget the struggles of Bangladesh’s political past.

"Many seem to forget the dark days we have overcome. Now, attempts are being made to divide the democratic movement and rewrite its history," he said.

He dismissed claims that BNP resists reform. "Those accusing us of opposing reform and focusing only on elections will lose their deposits in the next polls," he added.
