The rally took place on Friday (September 5) in Dhaka’s Shahbagh area, in response to a recent attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur. Protesters called for swift justice against the attackers, the resignation of the Home Affairs Advisor, and an immediate prohibition on the political activities of JAPA and the ruling alliance.
Parties showing solidarity included BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP, Islami Andolon, JSD, Revolutionary Workers Party, Gonosonghoti Andolon, AB Party, and Khilafat Majlish—forming a coalition of over 40 groups opposed to what they described as a fascist regime.
Speakers at the rally claimed that the Awami League had dismantled democratic institutions and that its political allies—especially the Jatiya Party—had actively supported Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian governance. They alleged that the Jatiya Party was once again attempting to stir unrest and destabilize the country through political conspiracy.
“The Jatiya Party, a known collaborator of the Awami League and an agent of foreign interests, must be banned without delay,” said one of the speakers. “The 14-party alliance must also be outlawed for its role in suppressing democracy.”
At the conclusion of the rally, participants pledged to pursue their three-point demand—including justice for Nurul Haque Nur—through peaceful yet determined political action.
In a related development, the Jatiya Party's central office in Kakrail was attacked for the second time in just over a week. On Friday evening, a group of unidentified individuals launched an assault on the office, vandalizing property and setting parts of it on fire.
At the time of the attack, party leaders were holding a preparatory meeting for an upcoming Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi event. The surprise attack triggered panic among those present. Police later intervened, using water cannons and sound grenades to disperse the assailants. However, the incident caused significant disruption in the area, bringing traffic to a standstill.
The Jatiya Party has blamed the Gono Odhikar Parishad for orchestrating the attack, further escalating tensions between the two groups.
