AL's Letter to UN Unlikely to Influence Poll Support: Adviser

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain has said that the banned Awami League’s recent letter to the United Nations, requesting it to withdraw support for Bangladesh’s upcoming national elections, is unlikely to produce any result.
Responding to questions at the Secretariat on Wednesday (6 November), he remarked, “It will not do any good,” suggesting that the appeal is not expected to change the UN’s position regarding its engagement in the electoral process.
On 1 November, the Awami League, through former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, sent a letter to the UN Development Programme (UNDP) representative in Dhaka, urging the organisation to suspend its electoral assistance in Bangladesh.
The letter raised concerns about the credibility and inclusivity of the national elections. It called on the UN and UNDP to encourage political dialogue, ensure reconciliation among parties, and uphold human rights and the rule of law.
It further expressed reservations about UNDP’s involvement in the ballot management project and its broader institutional support for the polls, cautioning that such engagement could conflict with international legal obligations, UN principles, and UNDP’s mandate to support free, fair, and participatory elections.
