The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) expects a huge public turnout as its acting chairman Tarique Rahman is set to return to Bangladesh on December 25 after 17 years in exile.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the date on Friday, marking the first confirmed schedule for Rahman’s return following months of speculation about his arrival from London.
Since the announcement, party leaders said enthusiasm has surged among supporters across the country, with many preparing to travel to Dhaka to welcome him. However, formal instructions for activists have yet to be issued.
Tanveer Ahmed Robin, secretary of BNP’s Dhaka South unit, said supporters from all levels, along with members of the public, are expected to line the streets to greet Rahman.
“The country will witness something extraordinary that day. His return will be remembered as a historic moment,” he said.
Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna echoed the sentiment, saying anticipation extends beyond party ranks. “People nationwide are eagerly waiting for his arrival,” he said.
Addressing party activists earlier, Fakhrul said Rahman’s return would be a defining moment for the party, urging preparations to reflect its significance.
Party leaders said organisational planning is underway, with detailed arrangements to be announced closer to the date. Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said discussions are ongoing to ensure a memorable reception.
Rahman is expected to stay at a residence in Gulshan, near BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s home. If preparations are incomplete, he will temporarily stay at her residence, where arrangements have already been made.
Meanwhile, the government has assured that adequate security measures will be in place to ensure Rahman’s safe return and movement.
