Former interim government adviser Mahfuj Alam has said he will not join the National Citizen Party (NCP) following its decision to align with the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance ahead of the national election.
In a social media post on Saturday, the former information and broadcasting adviser said that while his respect and personal ties with his political colleagues remain intact, he has decided not to become part of the NCP under the current circumstances.
He also dismissed speculation that he had not received any proposal from the Jamaat–NCP alliance, clarifying that such claims were incorrect.
Mahfuj said maintaining his long-held political position was more important to him than contesting the election as a candidate of the alliance from any constituency in Dhaka.
Earlier in the day, NCP Convener Nahid Islam announced that the party had joined the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance in a bid to build broader political unity ahead of the polls, adding that the decision did not imply ideological alignment with Jamaat.
