The BNP has expelled nine leaders for violating party decisions and carrying out organisational activities independently. Those expelled include Rumeen Farhana, co-secretary for international affairs of the party’s National Executive Committee; Saiful Alam (Nirab), former convener of Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP; and Hasan Mamun, a member of the Central Executive Committee.

The decision was announced on Tuesday in a statement signed by senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. According to the statement, the leaders have been removed from all party positions, including primary membership.

The other expelled leaders are Muhammad Gias Uddin, Mohammad Shah Alam, and Abdul Khalek, members of the National Executive Committee; Tarun De, former vice president of the Central Chhatra Dal and secretary general of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Welfare Front; Mamunur Rashid, vice president of Sylhet District BNP; and Mehedi Hasan, president of Bancharampur Upazila BNP in Brahmanbaria.

Rumeen Farhana, Saiful Alam, and Hasan Mamun have each submitted nominations as independent candidates in the 13th national parliamentary election. In Brahmanbaria-2, the party has nominated Maulana Junaid Al Habib of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh. In Dhaka-12, BNP ultimately allocated the seat to Saiful Haque of the Revolutionary Workers Party, while in Patuakhali-3 the nomination went to Nurul Haque of Gono Odhikar Parishad.
