Peace, Not Conflict, Tarique Urges at Rajshahi Rally

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Thursday urged the interim government to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the recent incident in Sherpur, reiterating that his party stands for peace, not conflict.

Addressing an election rally at Rajshahi Madrasa Ground in the afternoon, Tarique said stability and harmony were essential to delivering on political promises. “We believe in peace. Only in a peaceful environment can we fulfil what we promise. We do not want quarrels or disputes,” he said.

He added that criticism alone would not solve people’s problems, create jobs, or ease the burden on farmers. “Standing on this stage, I am not criticising anyone. Criticism does not fill stomachs, generate employment, or waive agricultural loans,” he said.

Referring indirectly to the clash between BNP and Jamaat activists in Sherpur that left one person dead, Tarique said it was the responsibility of the interim government to conduct a proper investigation into any untoward incident.

“If any BNP member is found involved, we will fully cooperate with the investigation. If the probe is carried out properly, justice must be ensured in line with the country’s laws,” he said.

Tarique also emphasised communal harmony, saying people of all faiths—Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians—want to live together peacefully.

Recalling the spirit of unity in 1971 and recent mass movements, he said now was the time to rebuild the country and safeguard freedom without division. “We do not want to see religion; we want to see people. We want to see Bangladeshis who believe in democracy,” he added.

Looking ahead to the referendum on February 12, Tarique said a victory for the BNP’s sheaf of paddy symbol would mark the beginning of a nationwide people’s victory march from February 13.

He further pledged that a BNP government would waive agricultural loans of up to Tk 10,000, including interest, and take initiatives to build a barrage over the Padma River to address water scarcity in major rivers such as the Padma, Teesta and Brahmaputra.
