Faridpur, Aug 1 --A journalist was seriously injured in an attack carried out by the younger brother of Alfadanga municipal mayor and his followers on Monday.

Mujahidul Islam is the Alfadanga district correspondent of Dhaka Times and organizing secretary of Alfadanga Press Club.

He was taken to Lalmonirhat Upazila Health Complex but was later transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital as he was in critical condition.

Mujahid came under attack at a local bus stand on Monday noon.

According to the victims, Japan, the younger brother of Alfadanga municipal mayor along with some of his followers attacked him with a sharp weapon, leaving him critically injured.

Police have arrested a man involved in this incident, said Suman Kar, assistant superintendent of police (Madukhali Circle).

Those involved in the attack will be brought to justice, added the officer.

Witnesses said a young man named Ramiz went to the counter of Rajdhani Paribahan in Alfadanga to buy tickets. He paid the price of a ticket to Dhaka and boarded the bus. Before leaving the bus, it was said from the 'cash counter' that Ramiz did not pay for the ticket. So he will not be allowed to go to Dhaka.  Ramiz wants help from another person named Naeem.

At this moment, the manager of counter Japan and his associates attacked the journalist Mujahid as soon as he came to the spot to settle the matter.

Faridpur District Magistrate (DC) Atul Sarkar said, he has already instructed the upazila nirbahi officer of Alfadanga to take necessary action in this regard. - UNB
