The event, held at Tathya Bhaban in Dhaka, was to distribute welfare grants and scholarship cheques to the children of journalists martyred or injured during the July Uprising. Nahid described the government's initiative to support these families through scholarships as groundbreaking and a significant step in easing their financial burdens.
Reflecting on the sacrifices made by journalists during the uprising, the adviser acknowledged the role of many journalists in resisting fascism, while noting that some had sadly collaborated with it. He called for a thorough discussion on the media’s role over the past 15 years.
Nahid also assured continued support for the families of martyred or injured journalists, adding that the interim government is considering providing a monthly retirement allowance for senior and distinguished journalists.
While welcoming media criticism, the adviser reiterated that the government does not pressure the press.
During the ceremony, a total of Tk 1,80,26,000 was distributed to 463 journalists' families. The event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, as well as journalists from print and electronic media.
