Since 2017, Bangladesh has opened its doors to over a million Rohingya refugees fleeing violence and persecution in Myanmar. Despite the country’s humanitarian efforts, Prof. Yunus reiterated that the only lasting solution to this crisis lies in the safe and voluntary repatriation of the Rohingyas to their homeland. He stressed the need for the global community to step up efforts to facilitate their return and end this long-standing humanitarian disaster.
Prof. Yunus also condemned the UNHCR's recent funding cuts in the humanitarian sector, warning that these reductions jeopardize the lives of millions, including displaced Rohingyas. He urged for greater international cooperation to address the crisis and provide essential support for those at risk.
"Bangladesh remains steadfast in its commitment to combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and all forms of related intolerance," said Prof. Yunus, emphasizing the nation's role in championing non-discrimination as enshrined in the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
As a signatory to ICERD, Bangladesh continues to uphold the principles of equality and non-discrimination as foundational values in governance and society. Prof. Yunus reiterated the importance of global unity in advancing these ideals, calling for stronger collaboration and investment in efforts to promote human dignity, equality, and justice worldwide.
