The Cabinet on Monday approved, in principle and in final form, the draft Special Solar Power Installation Act, 2026, aimed at accelerating the expansion of solar power installations across Bangladesh.

The approval came at a Cabinet meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The draft legislation seeks to convert the Special Solar Power Ordinance, 2026, into an act.

“The draft law was placed before the Cabinet meeting for approval. The Cabinet cleared it subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division,” Cabinet Secretary Dr Nasimul Ghani told reporters after the meeting.

He said the ordinance had been promulgated under Article 93(1) of the Constitution to accelerate the expansion of solar power installations.

Under Article 93(2), an ordinance issued under Article 93(1) must be placed before Parliament at its first meeting following its promulgation, he explained.

Following the Cabinet's approval, the draft legislation will be placed before Parliament as a bill.

Once Parliament passes the bill and the President gives assent, it will become an act.

The cabinet secretary said the proposed law would be subject to parliamentary debate, during which amendments could be made if necessary.
