The government has approved the import of 2.20 lakh metric tons of wheat from the United States under a Government-to-Government (G2G) agreement.

The decision was made at the 48th meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase, held virtually on Tuesday, chaired by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.

The Ministry of Food proposed the procurement, which will be implemented by the Directorate General of Food.

The wheat will be supplied by Agrocorp International PTE Ltd, an authorized partner of US Wheat Associates, at a total cost of Tk 842.06 crore, with a price of US$312.25 per metric ton.

Officials said the import is intended to strengthen public food reserves and ensure a stable supply for social safety net programs.
