Patenga Bay Terminal master plan awaits approval

The Master Plan and the Detailed Area Plan prepared by the Consultant of Bay Terminal was submitted to the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) last month.

The Master Plan has  been sent to the Shipping Ministry for approval, CPA secretary Muhammad Omar Faruk said on Wednesday.

The Master Plan has been prepared by two Consultant firms Kun Hwa Engineering and Consulting Company Limited and Daeyoung Engineering Company Limited of South Korea.

The two firms were appointed as the Consultants in April, said Faruk.

The project’s feasibility study,  completed in 2017, has been updated in the Master Plan, incorporating Cargo Vessel and Road Traffic Projection, Urban Drainage Assessment, Railway Connectivity and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.

Meetings were held between the CPA, the  Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), Bangladesh Railway (BR), Roads and Highways Department (RHD), the  Water Development Board, Chittagong WASA and Chittagong City Corporation to get their inputs. 

Meetings were held also with the other stakeholders.

Anandangar/Sandwip Channel, the location proposed for the Bay Terminal would be linked with the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, the railway and inland waterway.

CPA plans to build the modern terminal to facilitate berthing of big ships and handling  Panamax-class container vessels and bulk carriers.

The Bay Terminal is being planned to have Container Freight Station (CFS), Un-stuffing Shed, Less than Container Load (LCL) Warehouse, Container Handling Yard, Container Scanners, Electrical Substation, Standby Generator Room, Civil and Electrical Maintenance Office, Yard Lighting Towers, Mechanical Workshop, Petroleum, Oil and Lubricant (POL) Storage Tank with dispensing units, Elevated Water Reservoir, Water Pump House. Effluent Treatment Plant, Terminal Operation Building, Toilet Blocks, and Resting Facilities for workers. 

It would also have Security Office, Administrative Building, Customs Office, Fire Station, Guest House, Canteen for workers, Waste Water Treatment Plant, Medical Centre.

For neutralizing and preventing damage and danger, the Dangerous Cargo Shed close to Fire Station has been proposed.

Construction of the 1,200-acre Bay Terminal,  off the Patenga coast in Chattogram, near the Chattogram Port and the Chattogram Export Processing Zone begins  in the next month, said CPA secretary.

The South Korean consultants would be paid Tk 126.50 crore.
