A 37-year-old man was brutally beaten to death aboard a moving train in northern India following a dispute over seating, triggering widespread outrage and raising fresh concerns over railway security.

The victim, identified as Deepak Yadav, was attacked by a group of nearly 20 men on the Delhi–Saharanpur passenger train near Khekra railway station in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district on Friday. He was travelling with his brother-in-law at the time of the incident.

According to railway officials, Yadav was a regular commuter on the route and boarded the train as usual. The altercation reportedly began over a seat and escalated into a violent mob assault as the train approached Fakharpur station.

A disturbing video of the incident, purportedly recorded by other passengers, surfaced on social media on Saturday. It shows a group of men viciously assaulting Yadav, even as some passengers tried in vain to stop the attack.

Police have arrested five suspects—identified as Sanjeev, Rahul, Vishal, Priyanshu, and Siddharth—all residents of Khekra in Baghpat. Authorities are investigating the involvement of others in the group.

“A First Information Report has been filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to rioting (191(2)) and murder (103),” said Udham Singh Talan, railway police inspector of the Baraut section.

The incident has sparked outrage among commuters and rights activists, with calls for improved onboard security and stricter action against mob violence on public transport.
