Eid rush slows down traffic on Dhaka-Tangail Highway

News Desk Transportation 2022-04-29, 2:01pm

Traffic on a 15-kilometre stretch on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway has slowed down on Friday.

Traffic on a 15-kilometre stretch on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway has slowed down on Friday as the rush of homebound people picks up pace.

The vehicles are moving at a snail’s pace from Kalihati to the Bangabandhu Bridge’s eastern end. Officials say traffic is yet to come to a standstill, but fear that might be the case when traffic increases as the day pass by.

“The traffic is heavy on the highway, but there’s no tailback yet,” Inspector Eshrajul Haque of the Tangail traffic police told Dhaka Tribune.

Recurring traffic jams were seen at several spots, including Pouli and Elenga, in Kalihati upazila on Friday.

“Traffic has slowed down and vehicles have been moving haltingly. It’s likely to increase further as offices and apparel factories went on holiday from Friday,” said OC Ataur Rahman of the Elenga Highway police station.

According to a recent Buet study, around three million people are leaving Dhaka every day to spend the Eid holidays at their village homes.
