Police recovered the hanging body of an Imam from his room at a mosque in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram district on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Amir Hossain, 40, Imam of Raja Mia Saudagar Jame Mosque in the Banglabazar area of Sonaichhari Union.

Police recovered the body around 11pm and sent it to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said Md Mahinul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Sitakunda Model Police Station.

Locals said Amir Hossain had been serving as Imam of the mosque for the past 13 years.

He was last seen leading Asr prayers but did not appear for Maghrib or Isha prayers.

Later, mosque officials and local residents found him hanging from a ceiling fan inside his room on the second floor of the mosque building, reports UNB.

Mohammad Iftekhar Ahmed, general secretary and mutawalli of the mosque management committee, said a letter was recovered from the room.

He said the letter contained references to personal relationships and emotional distress.

He said Amir Hossain had also posted an emotional message on his Facebook account before his death.

We are investigating the incident to determine the actual cause of death, said the OC.
