A septuagenarian man was hacked to death allegedly by his son-in-law at his shop in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur district on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Majid Morol, 70 of Jamalpur Madhyapara area.

Mozammel Hossain alias Muza Sarker, 35, son of late Noab Ali Sarker of Uttar Jamalpur Sarkarpara area and son-in-law of the deceased, surrendered to the police station on Saturday, said ASI Shafik of Kaliganj Police Station.

Police said Mozammel had been involved in a long-running dispute with his wife, Shahanaz Begum, daughter of Majid Morol.

Shahanaz had left her husband's home several times and returned to her father's house following allegations of drug abuse, physical assault and domestic violence.

She had been staying with her father.

An altercation broke out between Mozammel and Majid over his alleged abuse of Shahanaz.

At one stage, Mozammel went to Majid's banana shop in Jamalpur Kalapatti area around 4pm Friday carrying an axe inside a trolley bag, reports UNB.

Later, he stabbed Majid with the axe, leaving him injured.

Later, he was taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.

Md Zakir Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Police Station said police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy.
