Sylhet, Nov 30 – The body of a 14-year-old madrasa student was recovered from the Kushiyara River in Beanibazar upazila of Sylhet, on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased, identified as Salman Ahmed, was a student of Sylhet’s Jameya Dinia Madrasa and a resident of Angura Muhammadpur village in the upazila, said Md Sabed Ali, officer-in-charge of Beanibazar Police Station.

Salman’s body was retrieved by police and fire service divers at approximately 4:00 pm, the OC said.

According to locals, Salman had gone to bathe in the river at the Old Madrasah Kheowaghat area near his home on Friday afternoon. He drowned as he did not know how to swim. Fire service divers, police, and local residents conducted a search until Friday evening but were unable to locate him.

“Salman entered the river with his brother for a swim. He did not know how to swim and went under. Despite our efforts, we could not rescue him on Friday. We recovered his body this afternoon,” the OC said.

The family has requested that the body be handed over without an autopsy, the OC said.

Necessary procedures are currently being carried out to meet their request, the OC added. - UNB
