Severe cold cripples daily life in Chuadanga

Chuadanga, Dec 24 -Residents of the southwestern district of Chuadanga are grappling with reducing temperatures as dense fog and chilling winds disrupt daily life.

Despite clear skies in the morning, the intensity of the cold persists, causing severe suffering, particularly, homeless and vulnerable people.

The local meteorological department has reported that a mild cold wave is sweeping across the district. At 9am on Wednesday, the district recorded this season’s lowest temperature of 10.5°C, with 95 percent of humidity.

Due to severe cold, Chuadanga Sadar Hospital has been experiencing an increase of patients who are mostly affected by rotavirus-induced diarrhea, pneumonia, and respiratory.

Dr. Asadur Rahman Malik Khokon, a pediatric specialist of the hospital, said nearly 200 to 300 elderly patients and 300 to 400 children are receiving treatment daily for cold-related ailments.

Azim Uddin, a farmer suffering from asthma and respiratory issues, said he struggles to work in the fields during the cold and must take frequent breaks, though he continues laboring to earn his livelihood.

Rokibul Hasan, senior observer at Chuadanga’s first-class meteorological office, predicted that temperatures may fall further in the coming days.

He also forecast that another cold wave may sweep the southwestern districts at the end of December or the start of the new year. - UNB
