The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has said the likelihood of a major cold wave affecting the country for the remainder of January is low, despite the period being considered the peak of the winter season.

On Saturday, the lowest temperature in the country was recorded at 9 degrees Celsius in Tetulia of Panchagarh district.

Under meteorological guidelines, temperatures ranging from 8.1 to 10 degrees Celsius are classified as a mild cold wave. However, the Met office does not officially declare a cold wave if such conditions are limited to a few isolated areas.

Although parts of three northern districts experienced mild cold wave conditions on Friday, the situation eased slightly the following day.

Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque said temperatures across the country are expected to remain almost unchanged over the next two days. After that, a gradual rise in temperatures is likely.

He added that there are no clear signs of a new cold wave at least until January 26. While the possibility of colder conditions later in the month has not been fully ruled out, the BMD said the chances of another cold wave in January remain low if the current warming trend continues.
