International Women's Day (IWD) is being observed on Friday (March 8) in Bangladesh as elsewhere in the world.

The day is observed every year on March 8 to celebrate women’s movement and struggle for equality, in the face of deeply entrenched patriarchy.

The United Nations has designated the year 2024's theme as 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress' with a focus on addressing economic disempowerment, while the campaign theme for this year is 'Inspire Inclusion.'

Different women, social and political organizations have taken separate programmes to observe the International Women's Day in Bangladesh tomorrow.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, issued messages greeting all women across the world on the occasion of International Women's Day.

The President, in his message, said apart from government, private and socio-cultural organisations should come forward with various development projects for development of women.

He described this year's theme of the day 'Narir Somo Odhikar, Somo Sujog-Egiye Nite Hok Biniyog' as time befitting.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said since 2009, the Awami League-led government has been continuously working to ensure the equal participation of men and women in all work, she said.

Investments and gender-responsive financing are being promoted to achieve gender equality and women's empowerment in the global context, she said.

The Department of Women Affairs is creating opportunities for sustainable livelihood by providing self-employment and training to women along with upholding equal rights, opportunities and self-esteem of women, she said.

Women's benefit and mother and child support programs are being implemented with the aim of ensuring maternal and child health and making women self-reliant, the premier added.

Five women will be awarded for their contributions in different fields on the occasion of International Women's Day, said State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Simin Hossain Rimi.

She said each of the five winners will be given a cheque for Tk1 lakh, crest, shawl and certificate.

Marking this day, different socio-political organizations have taken up elaborate programmes. Naripokkho will organise a musical evening ar Rabindra sorobor in Dhanmandi while Biplabi Workers' Party and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal will hold discussion meetings at their respective offices. - GreenWatch News Desk
