Iranians wave Irans national flags during a rally to show their solidarity and support to the new Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Mojataba Khamenei in Tehran, on April 29, 2026.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has claimed that the United States suffered a “disgraceful defeat” in its confrontation with Iran, as tensions remain high in the region.
In a written message broadcast on state television on Thursday, he said recent developments marked a turning point following what he described as large-scale military aggression by the US and its allies. He added that a “new chapter” is emerging for the Persian Gulf and the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The message coincided with Iran’s annual “Persian Gulf Day” and came weeks after Khamenei assumed leadership following the death of his predecessor, Ali Khamenei, in a series of strikes.
Khamenei, who has not appeared publicly since taking office, also questioned the effectiveness of US military presence in the region, saying American bases lack the ability to ensure even their own security.
He highlighted Iran’s new approach to managing the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as part of a broader framework aimed at ensuring stability and economic progress for regional countries. The waterway, a key global energy route, has become a major flashpoint, with Iran recently restricting shipping and introducing transit tolls.
Iranian officials say the country has already begun generating revenue from these measures. Khamenei expressed confidence in a future where regional affairs are managed without external interference, criticising foreign powers for their involvement.
He also praised Iran’s domestic capabilities, pointing to advances across scientific, industrial and military sectors as key national assets.
Earlier in the day, President Masoud Pezeshkian dismissed a US naval blockade as ineffective, warning it would only heighten tensions and undermine stability in the Gulf.
Senior military officials have also echoed a defiant stance, indicating that new naval capabilities could be deployed soon as the situation continues to evolve.
