The US Virtual Embassy in Iran has issued a new security alert urging American citizens to avoid travel to Iran and calling on those already in the country to leave.

In a statement published on its website, the US diplomatic mission warned US citizens not to travel to Iran “for any reason,” citing heightened regional security concerns and the potential for a rapid escalation of military hostilities.

The alert specifically referenced Iranian-supported Houthi forces and their involvement in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks affecting civilian airports. The embassy said the ongoing military conflict could escalate rapidly, creating additional risks for Americans in the region.

The warning underscores the US government's continuing concerns about the security environment surrounding Iran and the broader Middle East. Americans currently in Iran were urged to consider leaving while commercial transportation options remain available.

The embassy's advisory also serves as a reminder that the United States has limited ability to provide consular assistance inside Iran, where Washington does not maintain formal diplomatic relations. US citizens in the country are therefore advised to exercise extreme caution, monitor official security updates and make arrangements to depart when it is safe and feasible to do so.

The latest warning comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran, Saudi Arabia and Iran-aligned armed groups in the region. The US government has repeatedly advised its citizens to carefully assess the risks of remaining in areas affected by military activity, as security conditions can change with little notice.

Americans in Iran should consult the latest guidance from the US Department of State and the Virtual Embassy Iran for updated information on travel restrictions, security conditions and available assistance.
