US Envoy Criticises Diplomats Over Netanyahu UN Walkout
US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz has criticised diplomats who walked out of the UN General Assembly hall as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took the podium to deliver his address on Thursday.
In a post on X, Waltz wrote, “Terrible to see all these ambassadors to the UN walk out on Israel.”
Comparing the walkout with the previous day’s session, he added, “Not nearly as many walked out on Iran yesterday – even after they machine gunned 40,000 of their own people.”
Dozens of diplomats left the General Assembly hall as Netanyahu approached the speaker’s stand, in a visible protest against Israel’s policies and military operations.
The walkout came as Netanyahu began his address at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Some delegates remained in the hall, while members of the Israeli delegation applauded the prime minister.
Netanyahu responded to the departures by telling those who remained in the hall that they should also leave if they wished, while describing those who walked out as “moral cowards”.
Waltz’s comments contrasted the diplomatic response to Netanyahu’s address with the previous day’s session involving Iran, reflecting Washington’s criticism of what it views as differing international responses to Israel and Iran.
