Ahmed al-Tanani, a Palestinian researcher and political writer, has told Al Jazeera that civilian deaths in Israeli strikes on Gaza are not “collateral damage” but part of a deliberate message to Palestinians.
“I don’t believe they are collateral damage, even by the occupation’s own reckoning,” he said. “The occupation knows exactly the extent of the harm caused in every bombardment.”
He said Israel wants Gaza’s residents to understand that “no one has immunity in the Strip”.
“As long as you are a living Palestinian in the Strip, you are a target on the bank of targets,” he said.
Al-Tanani accused Israel of identifying victims after they are killed and then linking them to armed factions. “We saw this with journalists, we saw it with writers,” he said. He added that Israel’s message to Palestinians is that they have no path, “except to look for the option of leaving the Gaza Strip, or to receive missiles”.
