Eight Colombian soldiers lost their lives when their helicopter, on a humanitarian mission, crashed near the Venezuela border, President Gustavo Petro announced on Sunday.

The incident occurred in the eastern department of Vichada, though the exact timing of the crash was not specified. The Colombian Air Force confirmed that the helicopter was located after a search operation in a remote area of the Cumaribo municipality, noting that there were no survivors.

Colombian media reported images showing the charred wreckage of the helicopter amid grassy fields.

The Air Force stated that support is being provided to the families of the deceased while a recovery mission is underway.
