On Saturday, a tragic incident in Sudan’s Darfur region left at least 12 people dead due to shelling by Sudanese paramilitary forces. Activists report that the violence occurred in the northern part of the vast and troubled region, which has increasingly fallen under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The bombardment also resulted in at least five individuals sustaining injuries, with local sources indicating that the affected community is in desperate need of medical assistance and humanitarian aid. The local resistance committee, a grassroots organization composed of volunteer groups dedicated to coordinating aid efforts, condemned the attack and highlighted the ongoing plight of civilians caught in the crossfire of a conflict that has been raging since April last year.

The RSF, initially formed to combat insurgent groups in Darfur, has become embroiled in a power struggle against the regular Sudanese army, exacerbating an already volatile situation. This escalation of violence continues to threaten the lives of innocent civilians, with many communities facing displacement and scarcity of essential resources.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos and devastation following the shelling, with families scrambling to find safety amidst the destruction. The local resistance committee has called for urgent international intervention and support to protect civilians and address the humanitarian crisis that is unfolding in the region.

As the conflict drags on, the situation in Darfur remains dire, with many fearing that without a concerted effort to restore peace and stability, further loss of life and suffering will ensue. The international community has been urged to take notice of the escalating violence and to provide assistance to those affected by the ongoing conflict.
