King Charles III 'Deeply Saddened' by Nanny's Stepson's Death
King Charles III expressed deep sadness on Saturday following the death of Edward Pettifer, 31, a British relative of his sons' former nanny, Tiggy Pettifer, in a truck-ramming attack in New Orleans.
The King was said to have personally contacted the family to offer his condolences, according to the UK's Press Association. Prince William and his wife Catherine also shared their shock, with William expressing his sadness over Pettifer's tragic death and offering their thoughts to the Pettifer family and other victims of the attack.
Edward Pettifer’s half-brother, Tom, is one of William's godsons and served as a page boy at William and Catherine's 2011 wedding.
Tiggy Pettifer, formerly Tiggy Legge-Bourke, was hired by Charles in 1993 as a nanny for William and Harry following his separation from Princess Diana. Pettifer's family had longstanding connections with the royal family.
In a family statement, the Pettifers said, “We are all devastated by the tragic news of Ed’s death. He was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend. We will miss him terribly.”
The attack occurred on New Year's Day when a U.S. Army veteran, allegedly loyal to the Islamic State, used a pickup truck to kill and injure revelers in New Orleans' French Quarter. The attacker was later shot dead by police.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed his sorrow over the British death, stating that the UK stands in solidarity with the U.S. against terror threats.
