China Vows Countermeasures Against New US Tariffs
China strongly condemned the new tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump on Sunday, vowing to take "corresponding countermeasures" to protect its interests. The move, which follows Trump's decision to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on Chinese imports, adds to existing duties and escalates tensions between the two nations.
In a statement, China’s commerce ministry criticized Washington’s "erroneous practices" and expressed "strong dissatisfaction" with the new measures. Beijing announced plans to challenge the tariffs at the World Trade Organization (WTO), asserting that the US’s unilateral actions violate international trade rules.
The ministry further stated that these tariffs not only fail to resolve US domestic issues but also damage economic cooperation. "China hopes the United States will address its own problems, such as the fentanyl crisis, rather than resorting to tariffs," the statement said.
China also urged the US to correct its actions, engage in dialogue, and work towards cooperation on the basis of mutual respect and equality.
In a separate statement, China’s foreign ministry emphasized that no one benefits from a trade or tariff war. "Imposing additional tariffs is counterproductive and will harm future cooperation, including efforts on drug control," the spokesperson warned.
