Two fans tragically lost their lives before the Copa Libertadores match between Chile's Colo Colo and Brazil's Fortaleza at the Estadio Monumental in Santiago, local authorities confirmed.

According to reports, a group of supporters attempted to force their way into the stadium and managed to bring down part of a protective fence. The two victims were tragically trapped under the collapsed structure.

Eastern Flagrancy Prosecutor Francisco Morales stated that the group of fans tried to enter the Estadio Monumental through the nearby Casa Alba building. Police quickly intervened to prevent them from entering, but a stampede ensued, causing the fence to collapse. Authorities are investigating whether a police vehicle may have been involved in the incident.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to their injuries at a nearby clinic.

Match Suspended in the 70th Minute

Later in the evening, the match between Colo Colo and Fortaleza was suspended in the 70th minute, with the score still 0-0. Local fans launched a protest, throwing objects onto the field, though it remains unclear whether the protest was connected to the earlier fatalities.

In response to the unrest, Fortaleza players retreated to the locker room, while Colo Colo's players, including captain Esteban Pavez and Arturo Vidal, attempted to calm the crowd. Uruguayan referee Gustavo Tejera eventually informed both teams that the match had been called off.

The South American football governing body CONMEBOL issued a statement expressing its sorrow, saying, "CONMEBOL deeply regrets the loss of two fans outside Estadio Monumental before the match between Colo Colo and Fortaleza. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones."
