At least 21 people were killed and nearly 30 others injured when a passenger bus overturned in southern Iran on Saturday, according to local officials.
The accident took place near the town of Kavar, located around 1,000 kilometres south of the capital, Tehran. The cause of the crash remains unknown.
“Unfortunately, 21 fatalities have been confirmed,” said Mohsen Afrasiabi, director of Kavar Hospital, adding that 29 injured passengers were receiving treatment.
Images from the scene showed the overturned bus lying on its side along a mountain road.
Iran has a poor road safety record, with official figures reporting nearly 20,000 deaths from traffic accidents in the year ending March.
