A senior Russian military officer was killed when a car bomb exploded in southern Moscow early Monday, investigators said, as authorities examined possible links to Ukrainian intelligence.
The blast struck a Kia Sorento driven by Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the army operational training directorate under the Russian General Staff, as he pulled out of a parking area around 6:55am local time. He later died from his injuries, according to the State Investigative Committee.
Investigators released footage showing the wrecked vehicle, with severe damage to the driver’s side. Officials said forensic teams were collecting evidence, questioning witnesses and reviewing CCTV recordings from the area.
Committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko said multiple motives were being considered, including the possible involvement of Ukrainian special services. There was no immediate response from Kyiv.
An unofficial Ukrainian website that lists individuals accused of crimes against Ukraine later updated its entry on Sarvarov, stating that he had been “liquidated.”
Several Russian military figures and prominent supporters of Moscow’s war in Ukraine have been killed in targeted attacks since the conflict began nearly four years ago, some involving car bombs in and around the capital.
The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin was promptly informed of the incident.
