Local BCL on Sunday announced to hold a rally at the Gazipur venue where the BNP-led 20-party alliance called a rally for December 27 unless Tarique Rahman seeks unconditional apology for his disparaging remarks about Bangabandhu.
District and city units of Bangladesh Chhatra League made the announcement at noon. Gazipur is one of the important district headquarters where BNP’s candidate stunned the AL by winning the mayoral election. Mayor Abdul Mannan abd 8 other BNP workers faced gunshot injuries during a recent demonstration in the district town. Meanwhile, a court on Saturday ordered the arrested the Mayors of Sylhet – one of the six metropolitan cities of Bangladesh – and Habiganj, a district town, and a former political adviser of Khaleda Zia in the Shah AMS Kibria murder case. The three have been indicted in a recent supplementary FIR by the police, about a decade after the murder.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is expected to address a public rally on Bhawal Bodre Alam Government College premises in the district on December 27.
Earlier, on Saturday, BCL warned Khaleda Zia not to enter the district until Tarique Rahman seeks apology for calling Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman a ‘Razakar’.
On December 15, BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman called Sheikh Mujibur Rahman a “great Razakar” for what he said disbanding Awami League calling it a “party of thugs”, and claimed that Bangabandhu’s family had no contribution to the country’s Liberation War.
Tarique, addressing a discussion marking the Victory Day in London said, ”Awami League claims that it’s a party of War of Independence, but it’s Sheikh Mujib who had banned Awami League describing it as a party of thugs. So, if it’s a party of Liberation War, Sheikh Mujib is a great Razakar for obliterating Awami League.” – UNB
