At the request of the Alliance of South Asian American Labor (ASAAL) for a screening committee interview all main candidates agreed to join from 3:00 to 6:30 pm on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at Smart Academia 165-23 Hillside Avenue – 2nd Floor. At this meeting we will hear from the candidates their contribution to and their vision for the future of City Council District 23 and the people they will be representing. We will also discuss with the candidates issues that ASAAL thinks are important for the community, locality, City and State.Upon candidates arrival, after introductions, candidate will be offered three minutes to give an opening statement, then there will be a twenty five minute question and answer session followed by a two minute closing statement by the respective candidate.
Once all are interviewed the committee will evaluate candidates positions on issues important to ASAAL followed by a secret ballot voting by the dues paying qualified members of ASAAL. Shortly thereafter the results will be announced in a news conference and the endorsed candidate will be contacted accordingly.
Finally let us assure you that ASAAL does a fair, unbiased, community-need based endorsement without any hesitation or influence. As you may know due to Mr. Najmi’s candidacy he has been relieved from his ASAAL Political Action Director position. ASAAL National Vice President, Leela Maret, recording secretary of Engineers Local 375 has been proposed as the ASAALacting Political Action Director.
Despite our endorsement during this process, ASAAL will remain ready to fully support whoever wins in the primary onTuesday, September 8, 2015 and we look forward to working with anyone who wins the General Election. – ASAAL National Screening Committee
