Decision to ban airing Peace TV


The cabinet committee on law and order on Sunday decided to ban transmission of Peace TV that broadcasts speeches by Mumbai-based Islamic scholar Zakir Naik.A cabinet committee meeting, presided over by industries minister Amir Hossain Amu, took the decision, following the 1 July Dhaka attack in which one of the militants was allegedly inspired by Peace TV’s Zakir Naik’s speeches.Naik is under the scanner in India as well, as various reports criticised the preacher.

India’s union home minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said that speeches of Zakir Naik were being examined by the government and appropriate action will be taken, reports Indian news agency IANS.The cabinet meeting was presided over by Industries minister Amir Hossain Amu on Sunday.He briefed the journalists after the meeting.Amir Hossain Amu said sermon of the Juma prayer will be monitored every Friday, as well.The cabinet also decided to enhance the capacity of police by providing training and modern weapons.Police officials told the meeting that chargesheets in 14 cases, out of 37 cases filed in connection with militant attacks, have been submitted.It was decided at the meeting that unauthorised schools, colleges, hotels and restaurants in Gulshan area have been asked to shut down.Security will also be provided to export-oriented industrial units and EPZ areas if necessary, Amu said.Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed, tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon, information minister Hasanul Haq Inu, shipping minister Shajahan Khan, water resources minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, among others, attended the meeting.
