First N’wester causes crop damage and power disruption


The first norwester coupled with rain caused huge damage to the standing crops and power disruption in Rajshahi city and suburban areas this afternoon.Local met office sources said the velocity of the wind was 65 to 70 kilometre per hour that disrupted power supply totally in the city.
The gusty wind along with rainfall started at around 4.45pm and continued for over 30 minutes.A number of thatched houses and small shops were affected, standing crops were damaged and many seasonal fruit trees like mango, litchi and jackfruit were uprooted in different areas in the city and suburbs.However, the extent of damage couldn’t be known immediately. Rajshahi met office source said they recorded 12 millimeters of rainfall till 5.20pm.However, the power supply in the city could not be restored till filling of this report at 6.00 pm. The PDB sources said all the units are trying their level best efforts to restore the power supply.Minhajul Haque, Control Room Operator of Fire Service and Civil Defence, said two teams were engaged to remove the fallen trees on various areas of the city. -BSS, Rajshahi
