The BNP yesterday alleged that the elections in most of the polling centres in the first phase of Union Parishad polls were rigged amid occupation of centres and stuffing of ballots. The main opposition political party demanded cancellation polls of at least 50 Union Parishad.
“The government is making full of the people by taking the Union Parishad Election as its project. They are making a farce in the name of election,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while talking to reporters after placing wreath at the mazar of late President Ziaur Rahman.
Fakhrul said in many places ballot boxes have been filled up by stuffing with ballots in the night before the polling day.
He alleged that ballots boxes were filled up by stuffing with ballots in the previous night during Brahmanbaria pourasabha poll on Monday.
He, along with leaders of Zia Parishad, visited the Zia’s mazar to mark the 28th founding anniversary of the organisaiton.
On election of UP chairman unopposed, he questioned whether there was any precedence of holding UP polls without contestants.
“We know it well that they (ruling party) will snatch the poll result in favour of their candidates through violence and creating a reign of terror through using law enforcers and Election Commission,” he said.
The BNP leader argued that despite this they have taken part in the election as part of democratic movement.
BNP vice president Abdullah Al Noman said they have requested the Chief Election Commissioner to set up an example by cancelling elections in some polling centre for resorting to irregularities.
He was talking to reporters after meeting with the CEC Kazi Rakibudidn Ahmed at the EC premises.
The BNP leader said the EC can cancelled election of at least 50 Ups out of 712 where votes were rigged grossly.
“It may help reducing occupation of polling booths during the next phase of UP polls and the people confidence to the EC may be increased,” he said.
Meanwhile briefing reporters at party central office at Naya Paltan, BNP joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi focused on irregularities and vote riggings in different polling booths.
“We’re receiving information that most voting centres have been captured. We’re also have information about vote rigging, ballot box snatching, stuffing, driving out of our agents, and their beating, intimidation of voters and other massive irregularities,” he said.
Rizvi said vote decoities in the UP elections characterized the elections of upazila, poursabha and city corporation polls.
He further said the first phase UP polls have once again proved that no fair election is possible under the current regime.
Nazimuddin Alam, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, among others, were present on the occasion.
