Jamaat calls hartal for Sunday in protest

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called a dawn to dusk countrywide hartal for Sunday protesting the Supreme Court verdict that upheld death penalty awarded to the party’s chief Motiur Rahman Nizami for his 1971 war crimes.
Jamaat acting ameer Makbul Ahmad and acting secretary general Dr Shafiqur Rahman announced the programme through a joint statement following the Supreme Court verdict. The statement signed by media wing member M Alam said the party would observe doa dibas on Friday and hold peaceful procession across the country on Saturday.
The hartal will begin at 6:00am on Sunday and will continue for 24 hours, said the statement.
Ambulance, fire-service and hospital vehicles, press and other emergency services will be outside the purview of the hartal.
The Jamaat leaders described Nizami as a clean politician and observed he (Nizami) was deprived from justice.
They also accused the government of “planning to kill Maulana Nizami in the name of crimes against humanity to gain its political revenge.”
The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the death penalty awarded to Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former minister Motiur Rahman Nizami for his wartime crimes, dismissing his review plea against the gallows.
Meanwhile, the government has tightened the security across the country, especially in the capital to maintain the law and order.
The state-run news agency BSS quoted a police official as saying, “Law enforcement agencies have been put on alert across the country to avoid any sort of subversive activities over the verdict of Nizami’s appeal.” – Staff Reporter
